Build Your Automotive Career
3rd or 4th Year Mechanical Apprentice | Tuggerah, NSW | Full-time

The Opportunity
Do you enjoy figuring out why a vehicle isn’t running properly, rather than just replacing parts?

CCGT is looking for a 3rd or 4th Year Light Vehicle Mechanical Apprentice with a strong interest in diagnostics, fault finding and vehicle electrical systems.

This role is ideal for someone who wants to go beyond routine servicing and develop deeper skills in identifying faults, using diagnostic equipment and understanding the electrical and electronic systems found in modern vehicles.

You’ll join a small automotive repairs business in Tuggerah, working alongside experienced tradespeople who value quality workmanship, accurate diagnosis and getting the repair right. There is also the opportunity to build your auto electrical knowledge and potentially work towards becoming dual trade qualified in the future.

You will be employed by CCGT and placed with the Host Employer for your day-to-day work. CCGT will support you throughout the remainder of your apprenticeship while you continue your nationally recognised automotive qualification.

This is a full-time role working 38 hours per week, generally 8:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday.

What You’ll Actually Be Doing
You already have solid mechanical training behind you. This role will give you the opportunity to develop more advanced diagnostic and electrical skills as you continue your apprenticeship.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic vehicle faults
  • Use diagnostic equipment and scan tools to identify problems
  • Test electrical systems and components to determine the cause of malfunctions
  • Inspect vehicles for electrical and electronic faults
  • Read fault codes and use testing results to assist with diagnosis
  • Install, maintain and repair electrical wiring and electronic components
  • Work with batteries, charging systems, lighting and vehicle accessories
  • Assist with complex mechanical and electrical repairs
  • Develop a better understanding of how modern vehicle systems interact
  • Use workshop tools and diagnostic equipment safely and accurately

The focus isn’t just on changing parts. You’ll be encouraged to understand what caused the fault, how to test it and how to repair it correctly.

Why This Is a Good Place to Start
If diagnostics is the part of automotive work that interests you most, this role gives you the chance to build those skills in a real workshop environment.

You’ll gain:

  • Hands-on experience with vehicle diagnostics and fault finding
  • Exposure to both mechanical and electrical repairs
  • Experience using diagnostic and testing equipment
  • A deeper understanding of modern vehicle electrical systems
  • The opportunity to develop specialist automotive skills
  • A potential pathway towards becoming dual trade qualified
  • Practical training with experienced tradespeople
  • Regular CCGT support throughout your apprenticeship

You’ll also receive paid full-time employment and on-the-job training while completing your apprenticeship.

After your apprenticeship, career pathways may include Light Vehicle Mechanic, Diagnostic Technician, Automotive Electrical Technician, Dual Trade Automotive Technician, Workshop Leading Hand or Automotive Service Technician.

What We’re Looking For
This role could suit you if you:

  • Are currently a 3rd or 4th Year Light Vehicle Mechanical Apprentice
  • Have a genuine interest in diagnostics and fault finding
  • Enjoy working out problems and understanding how vehicle systems operate
  • Want to develop your auto electrical knowledge
  • Are interested in potentially becoming dual trade qualified
  • Have good attention to detail
  • Are confident asking questions when you are unsure
  • Take pride in accurate, quality workmanship
  • Work safely and follow workshop procedures
  • Are reliable and work well as part of a small team
  • Hold a current driver’s licence and own reliable vehicle

Please include details about your current apprenticeship stage, TAFE progress and any experience you already have with diagnostics, scan tools, electrical work or fault finding.

Pay
This is a paid, full-time apprenticeship. Current apprentice rates are:

  • $22.09 per hour, or approximately $839.33 per week for a 3rd Year Apprentice
  • $25.92 per hour, or approximately $984.81 per week for a 4th Year Apprentice

Rates are before tax and based on 38 ordinary hours per week. Your exact rate will depend on the applicable apprenticeship classification and will be confirmed before an employment offer is made. Superannuation and any applicable overtime, penalty rates and allowances are paid in addition.

Once qualified, your earning capacity can be up to $110,000+ per year, particularly as you build specialist diagnostic, electrical or dual trade skills.
