About the Position

The Cook is a key member of the 7 Grams kitchen, responsible for preparing and cooking the cafe’s menu to a consistent standard across busy daytime service periods. Working within a compact team, the role takes ownership of food quality, presentation, portion control and food safety on the line, contributes to menu planning and ingredient forecasting, and provides practical guidance to the four kitchen staff and apprentices working alongside it. The position is central to keeping a high-volume cafe kitchen running smoothly, safely and efficiently while meeting customers’ growing expectations around fresh produce and dietary needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Regulate and monitor the temperature of ovens, grills and other cooking equipment to achieve consistent cooking results.
  • Season food during preparation and cooking using appropriate herbs, spices, sauces and other ingredients.
  • Portion cooked food to established serving sizes, plate and present meals, and finish dishes with suitable sauces, gravies, dressings and garnishes.
  • Store raw, prepared and cooked food in refrigerators, freezers and other temperature-controlled facilities, ensuring correct labelling, stock rotation and food safety practice.
  • Prepare meals to meet special dietary requirements, allergies, intolerances and other specified dietary needs.
  • Assist with menu planning and estimate the quantities of ingredients required for food preparation and scheduled service periods.
  • Train and provide practical guidance to junior kitchen staff and apprentices in food preparation, cooking techniques, equipment operation and food safety procedures.
  • Maintain clean and hygienic food preparation, cooking and storage areas, and comply with workplace health and safety and food handling requirements.

  • Strong attention to detail in food quality, presentation and precise portion control.
