The Retail Shop Manager organises and controls the operations of the company’s retail florist establishment. The position holder is accountable to the Director for the commercial performance, staffing, stock and service standards of the shop, and manages its day-to-day trading with a high degree of autonomy.

The business sells fresh cut flowers, floral arrangements and bouquets, indoor plants, giftware and related products directly to the general public, and supplies floral services for weddings, funerals, corporate clients and other events. The role requires specialist knowledge of perishable floral stock, seasonal supply and pricing, and retail management practice.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Merchandising, stock and purchasing

•Determine the product mix, stock levels and range offered for sale, taking account of seasonality, local demand, occasions and price points.

•Formulate and implement purchasing policy; source and order stock from flower growers, wholesale markets and giftware suppliers; negotiate prices, quality standards and delivery terms.

•Manage perishable inventory end to end — receipt, conditioning, cool-room storage, rotation, quality inspection and disposal — and monitor and reduce wastage against target.

•Conduct stocktakes, maintain accurate stock records, and reconcile stock on hand against purchases and sales.

Pricing, sales and marketing

•Set and review retail prices and gross margins for individual stems, bouquets, arrangements, event packages and delivery services.

•Plan and implement promotional and advertising activity, including seasonal peak campaigns (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas), social media content, online store and marketplace listings, and local promotion.

•Develop and maintain corporate, event and repeat-customer accounts and referral relationships with venues, funeral directors and wedding planners.

•Sell products and services to customers and advise them on selection, flower care and arrangement options; prepare quotations; take, schedule and follow up custom and event orders.

Customer service

•Set and maintain customer service standards, shop presentation and window and floor displays.

•Conduct consultations for wedding, funeral and corporate floral work, including brief-taking, design proposals and delivery logistics.

•Handle and resolve customer complaints, refunds and service failures, and implement corrective action.

•Coordinate the delivery and courier schedule to ensure orders are fulfilled accurately and on time.

Staff management

•Select, recruit and induct florists, sales assistants and casual staff.

•Prepare rosters and allocate daily duties, managing labour cost against budget and trading peaks.

•Train and develop staff in floristry technique, product knowledge, point-of-sale operation and customer service.

•Supervise, monitor and review staff performance; manage day-to-day performance and conduct issues and escalate to the Director where required.

Financial and administrative management

•Prepare and monitor the operating budget and sales targets for the establishment, and report performance to the Director.

•Maintain records of financial transactions; operate and reconcile the point-of-sale system; bank daily takings; process and approve supplier invoices.

•Analyse sales, margin, wastage and labour data, and adjust range, pricing, rostering and purchasing in response.

•Maintain and provide business records to the company’s bookkeeper and accountant to support BAS lodgement and financial reporting.

Compliance and safety

•Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, including safe use of floristry tools, knives and chemicals, manual handling, cool-room safety and slip and trip hazard control.

•Maintain incident, hazard and first aid records and implement corrective actions.

•Ensure the business meets its obligations in relation to consumer law, employment record-keeping, and applicable modern award or enterprise conditions.

•Maintain security of premises, cash and stock, including opening and closing procedures.

Requirements:

•A qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or higher, in a field highly relevant to retail or business management; or, where permitted, at least three (3) years of relevant managerial experience in place of the formal qualification.

•Sound numeracy and commercial judgement, including budgeting, margin management and sales analysis.

•Competent spoken and written English and strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

•Working knowledge of point-of-sale systems, basic business software and online sales channels.

•Understanding of occupational health and safety obligations in a retail environment.
