Assistant Inspector-General and General Counsel
- Lead OIGIS’s Legal and Governance Branch and provide principal legal advice on public and administrative law, statutory interpretation and legislation.
- Oversee corporate governance, internal audit, statutory reporting, ministerial and parliamentary services, and Chief Risk Officer responsibilities.
- Lead legal and multidisciplinary teams, advise on inquiries and inspections, and contribute to executive decisions across the Office.
The Office of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (OIGIS) supports the independent Inspector-General in overseeing Australia’s intelligence and security agencies. This oversight ensures agencies act legally and with propriety, comply with ministerial guidelines and directives, and respect human rights.
OIGIS is seeking an experienced legal leader for the position of Assistant Inspector-General and General Counsel.
You will lead the Legal and Governance Branch and be the Office’s principal legal adviser, providing advice on public and administrative law, statutory interpretation and legislation affecting the Office’s jurisdiction. Your advice will shape how inquiries and inspections are conducted, including where precedent is limited. You will build relationships with General Counsel and senior executives across the National Intelligence Community and relevant departments, and work across branches to support the Office’s strategic direction.
You will also oversee corporate governance, internal audit, statutory reporting and ministerial and parliamentary services, and take on the Chief Risk Officer responsibilities. As a member of the Executive, you will contribute to decisions across the Office and work closely with colleagues as the organisation grows.
We are looking for a senior lawyer with sound judgement and the professional standing to engage with General Counsel across government as a peer. You will bring extensive expertise in public law, administrative law and statutory interpretation, significant experience in public inquiries and legislative processes, and a strong understanding of Australian Public Service governance and risk. You will have a record of leading legal and multidisciplinary teams and developing staff capability. Experience in a National Intelligence Community agency or another regulatory, oversight or investigative setting is highly regarded.
