About the Position

The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic is the trade backbone of the business, responsible for installing, servicing, fault-finding and repairing air-conditioning and refrigeration systems at customer premises. Working from drawings and specifications, the mechanic lays out and completes installations, overhauls and repairs existing systems, diagnoses faults in compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators and controls, and tests, evacuates and charges systems so that they operate correctly and without leaks. The role is largely autonomous on site and carries direct responsibility for the quality, safety and record keeping of each job, which makes it central to the business’s reputation for dependable maintenance work.

  • Install and repair components including compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators, switches and gauges, and copper lines for steam, gas, refrigerant, compressed air, oil and chilled water.
  • Bolt, solder, rivet, weld and braze pipes to connect equipment, checking alignment and accuracy of fit.
  • Fill systems with gas or fluid to check for leaks.
  • Test-operate refrigeration systems, check mechanisms and make adjustments.
  • Remove test gas and fluid using vacuum pumps and charge systems with refrigerant.
  • Check and overhaul air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, diagnose faults, and repair and replace defective components.
  • Adjust system controls and mechanisms and reassemble systems.
  • Carry out scheduled maintenance on customer air-conditioning and refrigeration systems.
  • Record the causes of malfunctions and the action taken, and maintain accurate job and refrigerant handling records.
  • Work safely and in accordance with refrigerant handling, electrical and workplace health and safety requirements.
