SAKS Motor Works is an automotive business based in Carlton, NSW, providing vehicle servicing, mechanical repairs and maintenance, together with a range of automotive services including vehicle detailing, performance-related work and pre-owned vehicles. The business focuses on delivering reliable automotive solutions, quality workmanship and attentive service to its customers.

We are seeking a qualified Motor Mechanic (General) to join our team. The successful applicant will be responsible for servicing, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining a range of motor vehicles, supporting the day-to-day operations of the workshop and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

Key responsibilities

  • Service, assess and repair light vehicles, including major systems such as gearboxes, steering, suspension and braking components.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical faults using inspection techniques and modern diagnostic scanning equipment.
  • Dismantle engines and related assemblies to inspect internal components, identify wear or damage and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Replace or recondition defective parts and rebuild and refit mechanical systems in line with manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform routine servicing, oil and filter changes, lubrication, brake maintenance and engine tuning, to maintain reliability and emissions compliance.
  • Road test vehicles and carry out final checks against performance, safety and roadworthy standards.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections and, where authorised, prepare documentation on required repairs or roadworthy compliance.
  • Perform tyre and wheel services, including fitting, balancing, rotation and alignment.
  • Test electrical components such as batteries, starter motors and charging systems.
  • Record completed work, parts and labour accurately and assist with repair estimates.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safety-focused workshop, and support apprentices or junior staff as required.

Skills and qualifications

  • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or an equivalent relevant automotive trade qualification.
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience in vehicle mechanical servicing, diagnostics and repairs.
  • Strong ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults using appropriate testing and diagnostic equipment.
  • Sound knowledge of vehicle engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, braking and associated mechanical systems.
  • Ability to dismantle, inspect, repair, replace and reassemble mechanical components in accordance with service requirements.
  • Competence in performing scheduled servicing, maintenance and mechanical repairs on light motor vehicles.
  • Ability to interpret service information and use manufacturer specifications and technical manuals when carrying out repairs.
  • Experience with vehicle performance-related mechanical work would be advantageous.
  • Ability to test and assess repaired vehicles and components to ensure proper operation and performance.
  • Good attention to detail and ability to work independently when diagnosing and resolving mechanical issues.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a workshop team while maintaining a high standard of workmanship.
  • Commitment to workplace safety, workshop organisation, and quality customer service.
