Arup has a strong brand for the delivery of technically excellent and timely ecological assessment and statutory approvals in Queensland. The aim of this role is to provide senior technical leadership to Arup’s Queensland ecology team, working alongside the Ecology Team Leader and other leaders in Queensland and nationally to strengthen technical capability and deliver high-quality ecological outcomes across transport, water, waste and renewable energy projects. This role is focused on technical leadership and assurance.
 

The Opportunity

  • Provide Technical Leadership to Our Queensland Ecology Team: Act as the team’s senior technical authority, setting high standards for ecological assessment, field investigations, impact assessment, approvals advice and technical reporting.
     
  • Lead the Technical Delivery of Complex Ecology Projects: Provide technical direction on major and complex projects, including study design, interpretation of ecological information, impact assessment, approvals strategy, technical review and resolution of challenging technical issues.
     
  • Strengthen Technical Capability Across the Team: Coach and mentor ecologists, develop technical guidance and consistent methods, and support knowledge sharing and professional development across the Queensland and national ecology teams.
     
  • Collaborate Closely with Business Leaders to Secure High-Profile Projects: Work hand-in-hand with top-level management to win key contracts, contributing to both ecology-focused and multi-disciplinary proposals that shape our success. 
     
  • Support Project Delivery and Work Winning: Work with project directors, project managers, the Ecology Team Leader and business leaders to develop technically credible scopes, methodologies, fee estimates and proposals for ecology-led and multidisciplinary opportunities.
     
  • Build Trusted Technical Relationships: Act as a senior technical adviser to clients, regulators and project teams, while supporting the broader client relationship and business-development responsibilities.
     

Is this role right for you?

  • Recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in Ecology, Botany, Zoology, Marine/aquatic sciences, Environmental Science or related discipline.
    12–15+ years of relevant experience, with demonstrated technical leadership on complex ecology projects in transport, infrastructure and/or renewable energy within a consulting or government environment.
     
  • Suitably Qualified Professional (SQP) status for protected plants surveys in Queensland seen favourably but not mandatory.
    Relevant industry experience undertaking field work in the area of terrestrial or marine/aquatic ecology.
     
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership, review and assurance for complex ecological investigations, impact assessments and regulator-facing deliverables.
     
  • Strong working knowledge of Queensland and Commonwealth environmental legislation, policy and approvals processes.
     
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clear, defensible technical advice; develop consistent methodologies and technical standards; and mentor ecologists to strengthen team capability.
