Structural Design & Remedial Engineers is a Queensland-based civil engineering consultancy startup specialising in civil design and remedial engineering, e.g. structural assessment, concrete repair, waterproofing and building remediation. We are building an AI-first business. We use AI and automation to speed up client service, reduce manual work, and deliver engineering outcomes more quickly and consistently.
About the role
We are looking for an ICT Business Analyst with strong leadership experience to lead our digital and AI transformation. Reporting to the Director, you will work with engineers, management, clients and developers. You will analyse how the business runs, then design, build and deploy AI-powered automation. This includes extensive use of Claude (Anthropic) and related AI tools across client intake, quoting, reporting, documentation and service delivery.
As an early hire in a startup, you will set the direction and standards for our systems. You will also guide staff and contractors through the change.
Key responsibilities Business analysis and requirements
•Work with engineers, clients and management to elicit, formulate and document business requirements
•Identify, investigate and analyse business processes, procedures and work practices across design, remedial and client service workflows
•Identify and evaluate inefficiencies, and recommend optimal business practices and system functionality and behaviour
AI and business automation
•Design and implement AI-driven automation, using Claude as the primary platform, to deliver client services faster. Examples include automated report drafting, proposal and quote generation, document review, email triage, and knowledge retrieval from project records
•Develop AI workflows, prompts, agents and integrations (e.g. via APIs, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, cloud storage and project management tools)
•Evaluate AI outputs for accuracy, quality and compliance. Set up human-review controls for engineering-related content
•Lead the broader digitisation of the business, including moving from manual and paper-based processes to integrated digital systems
Business leadership and delivery
•Use project management methodologies, principles and techniques to develop project plans, and to cost, resource and manage digital and AI projects
•Lead and mentor staff, contractors and developers. Drive adoption and change management in a startup environment
•Take responsibility for deploying functional solutions, including creating, adopting and implementing system test plans that ensure system quality and integrity
Specifications, documentation and training
•Develop functional specifications for system developers
•Use data and process modelling techniques to produce clear specifications for system and AI solution design
•Create user and training documentation, and run formal training on AI tools and new systems
•Act as a central reference and information source, providing guidance in system, AI and project decision-making
•Consult with users and programmers to design improvements to websites, apps, portals and internal systems
Skills and experience required
Essential
•A Bachelor degree or higher in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science (AI major or specialisation), Data Science, Information Technology or a closely related field with substantial AI study
•At least 1 years of experience as an ICT Business Analyst or in a similar role
•Demonstrated leadership experience, including leading projects, teams or cross-functional stakeholders, ideally in a startup or fast-growing business
•Previous experience in a civil engineering company setting, with a working understanding of civil design and remedial engineering workflows (e.g. site inspections, defect reports, design documentation, remedial scopes, quoting and project delivery)
•Hands-on experience applying AI and large language models (LLMs) to business automation, including prompt engineering and AI workflow design
•Practical experience with, or strong ability to quickly master, Claude and related AI tools and APIs
•Proven experience in requirements gathering, process mapping, functional specifications, test planning and UAT
•Working knowledge of project management methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall or hybrid)
•Strong communication, stakeholder management and training skills
Desirable
•Experience with automation and integration tools (e.g. Power Automate, Zapier, Make, Python scripting, REST APIs or similar)
•Familiarity with Claude AI, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Jira, Confluence or similar
•Existing or willing to obtain AI certifications (e.g. Microsoft Azure AI, AWS AI/ML, Anthropic courses)
Professional development
•The successful candidate must be willing to complete relevant AI and business analysis certifications (e.g. vendor AI certifications such as Anthropic, Microsoft or AWS) as the role develops
