The Opportunity

MIGAS is proud to be partnering with Anglo Coal, one of Australia’s largest suppliers of quality steelmaking coal with a focus on safety and sustainability.

Undertaking this four-year apprenticeship at Aquila Mine, 32km south from Middlemount in central Queensland, will give you the opportunity to become a trade qualified and earn your MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade.

Aquila Mine has been developed as one Australia’s most technologically advanced underground mines, leveraging Anglo American’s advancements in underground automation technology, remote operations and data analytics.

Job Details

As a School-Based Engineering - Mechanical Apprentice, you will gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced tradespeople while beginning the journey to develop the practical skills and knowledge required to become a qualified mechanic.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will learn how to:

  • Interpret engineering drawings, maintenance plans, and technical documentation to perform maintenance tasks accurately
  • Develop fault-finding and problem-solving skills on fixed plant equipment through both planned and breakdown maintenance activities
  • Learn condition monitoring techniques and equipment inspection practices to identify potential failures before they occur
  • Strengthen problem-solving and analytical skills through participation in planned shutdowns, breakdown response, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Build a strong foundation in mining industry safety standards, isolation procedures, risk management processes, and permit-to-work systems

This opportunity is designed for students who are currently attending school and are interested in pursuing a rewarding career in the mechanical trade.

You will work one day per week (5:30am to 5:30pm) while continuing your secondary studies, with the apprenticeship commencing at the beginning of 2027.

About You

  • You will bring a passion for the trade and be willing to listen, learn and actively seek out new learning opportunities
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • You will possess a good level of language, literacy and numeracy skills
  • A strong focus on safety
  • Be enrolled in Year 10 and starting Year 11 in 2027
  • Have a strong interest in mechanical work
  • Hold or near completion of obtaining a Certificate II in Mechanical Engineering Pathways would be advantageous
  • Have the ability to obtain a Health Assessment under the  Coal Mine Workers' Health Scheme, Standard 11 mining induction program, Drug and Alcohol test, and Police Check
  • Reside in Middlemount is essential
