Mad Monkey Backpackers Pty Ltd is an award winning hostel chain with 11 properties across Australia.
We are currently looking to recruit a Maintenance Manager to our team based in Cairns, looking after 4 properties as well as our two bars.
Our ideal candidate will have experience looking after a multi-site, multi-staff operation, preferably with backpacker hostels in the portfolio. The role requires a balance of ensuring a high standard of reactive and preventative maintenance against a tight budget.
Our hostels are vibrant hubs for travellers from all over the world, and we pride ourselves on keeping our space safe, sturdy, and looking great. From creative DIY upgrades and general hostel upkeep, your craft will directly impact the guest experience.
Key Duties include:
- Multi-Site Maintenance Oversight: Plan, schedule, and oversee all routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance operations across multiple hostel locations.
- Preventive Maintenance (PPM): Develop and execute comprehensive PPM schedules for HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, roofing, and structural infrastructure to minimis downtime.
- Team Leadership & Scheduling: Hire, train, schedule, and supervise on-site maintenance technicians and handymen across all properties.
- Vendor & Contractor Management: Source, negotiate terms with, and supervise specialised external contractors.
- Ticketing & Rapid Response: Oversee the property management system queue to ensure guest-reported issues and room repairs are resolved quickly and efficiently.
- Communal Space & Dorm Maintenance: Ensure high-use areas—including bunk beds, lockers, shared kitchens, communal bathrooms, and social lounges—are safe, fully functional, and presentable.
- Health, Safety, & Compliance: Ensure full compliance with local building codes, safety regulations, and fire codes across all properties; oversee regular testing of alarms, sprinklers, and emergency exits.
- Budgeting & Cost Control: Manage the annual maintenance operating budget, control costs for repairs and external services, and track CapEx projects.
- Inventory & Spare Parts Control: Maintain inventory for tools, replacement hardware, and spare parts across properties to ensure efficient repairs without overstocking.
- Sustainability & Energy Management: Monitor utility usage and implement energy-efficient and eco-friendly solutions across the property portfolio.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience: Minimum 2 years experience in a similar role.
- Problem Solver: Ability to work independently, troubleshoot issues, and find efficient solutions.
- Tool Savvy: Proficient and safe with standard hand and power tools.
- Social & Reliable: Comfortable working around international guests and team members in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility: Physical stamina to lift materials, work outdoors, and handle various physical tasks.
