Principal Data Architect (AO8)

We're partnering with a large Queensland Government client to recruit an experienced Principal Data Architect (AO8). In this role you will lead the design and implementation of the department’s central data capability – a strategic function that unifies data architecture, governance, engineering and business intelligence analysis into a coordinated service model.
What you'll be doing
- Work with business stakeholders to understand and map key business capabilities and processes, ensuring data architecture reflects business functions and supports strategic outcomes.
- Review existing systems and data flows to define current-state architecture. Design and maintain enterprise data architecture aligned with DSDIP’s ICT strategy and government standards.
- Monitor data needs across divisions, guiding projects to avoid duplication and promoting shared solutions.
- Engage with business stakeholders on data needs and develop high-level requirements and solution design that can be used to engage delivery partners. Collaborate with ICT delivery partners and vendors to ensure seamless integration of data solutions and alignment with enterprise architecture.
- Review and validate detailed designs to ensure alignment with architecture, security and privacy standards.
- Prepare detailed architecture documentation and handover materials to support internal teams with implementation and ongoing maintenance.
- Mentor staff, facilitate departmental data and analytics centre of practice and promote best practices
- Lead governance implementation, define standards and stewardship roles, and ensure compliance with data security, privacy, and government frameworks.
- Engage ICT and business stakeholders, provide expert advice, lead data workshops, and represent data interests in governance forums.
What we're looking for
- Experience in data architecture or senior data roles in complex organisations.
- Strong skills in business and data modelling, integration, and architecture using platforms like Microsoft Azure, Dynamics 365, ArcGIS, SQL, and Power BI
- Sound knowledge of governance, metadata, privacy and security frameworks.
- Proven leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience; certifications (e.g., Azure, TOGAF) and knowledge of QLD Government ICT frameworks are desirable.
