About the office

The Institute for Health Research, based on the Fremantle Campus, leads collaborative health research that aims to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable people. Its work supports the University's Exceptional Care research theme and includes registry research, clinical trials, artificial intelligence, health service research, developmental disorders, and support for complex research methods, data analysis, grants and ethics. 

About the role

The Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (Child and Adolescent Health) will lead research in epidemiology, biostatistics and child and adolescent health. The role will guide high-quality research projects, support staff and students, build strong partnerships, and help translate research into better practice, policy and outcomes. The role reports to the Director of the Institute for Health Research.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead research in epidemiology, biostatistics and child and adolescent health across the Institute and University.
• Design and manage high-quality research projects using strong research methods, data analysis and evidence review.
• Publish research, apply for research funding, and manage grants, budgets and reporting.
• Support and supervise research staff, students and partners to help build their skills and careers.
• Contribute to research plans, policies and governance that support the University's research goals.
• Build strong partnerships and help turn research into better practice, policy and outcomes, while working ethically and inclusively.

Qualifications, skills & experience

In addition to the requirements for an Academic Level E role, the successful candidate will have:

• A PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or a related field, with postgraduate training in applied statistics.
• A strong national and international reputation as a leader in their research area.
• A strong record of publishing high-quality research in child, adolescent or perinatal health, as well as epidemiology or biostatistics.
• Proven success in securing competitive research funding, including as a lead investigator.
• Experience leading research teams, managing grants, budgets and reporting.
• Experience supervising HDR students and supporting their successful completion and career development.
• Advanced skills in epidemiology and statistical methods, including causal inference, linked datasets and statistical software such as R.
• Experience conducting ethical research with children, young people or other vulnerable groups, including the negotiation of data and ethics approvals.
• Evidence of broader research leadership, such as committee work, grant review panels, editorial roles or discipline leadership.
