RECOVERY MENTOR

IPSWICH

Your Next Role!

Your lived experience has value. In this role, it becomes a powerful way to connect with someone who may be facing one of the hardest moments of their life.

We’re looking for a Recovery Mentor to join our Crisis Support Space (CSS) team, bringing your own lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery to support others with empathy, understanding and hope. This is peer work at its core. You’ll draw on what you have learned through your own journey to build genuine connection, help people feel less alone and show that recovery can look different for everyone.

The Crisis Support Space provides a welcoming, non-clinical alternative for people experiencing mental health distress or crisis, including people experiencing thoughts of suicide. Located alongside the Emergency Department, CSS offers a calm and supportive environment where people can connect with peer workers who understand the importance of being heard, respected and supported without judgement.

As a Recovery Mentor, you’ll spend time alongside people when they need connection most. Through meaningful conversations, purposeful sharing of your own lived experience and recovery-focused support, you’ll help individuals identify their strengths, reconnect with hope and consider what may support them moving forward.

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team while bringing something uniquely important to the service: the perspective of someone who understands recovery through lived experience. Together, you’ll help create a space where people are met as people first, with dignity, choice and compassion at the centre of every interaction.

Working Hours

Recovery Mentors work across a rotating roster aligned with the service's operating hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm
  • Saturday & Sunday (AM): 7:30 am – 3:30 pm
  • Saturday & Sunday (PM): 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide peer-based, recovery-oriented support to people experiencing mental health distress or crisis.
  • Draw on your lived experience purposefully and appropriately to build connection, encourage hope and support recovery.
  • Create genuine, respectful relationships that promote safety, dignity, choice and self-determination.
  • Support people to recognise their strengths, explore what matters to them and identify practical pathways forward.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical teams, community services and other supports while maintaining the distinct value and perspective of peer practice.
  • Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive environment where people feel listened to, understood and respected.

What You’ll Bring

Lived experience is an essential requirement of this role. We welcome applications from people with lived experience of mental health challenges, either as a consumer or carer, who can draw on that experience safely and purposefully in supporting others.

You’ll also bring:

  • A Certificate IV in Mental Health, or equivalent experience within peer support, mental health or human services.
  • A strong understanding of peer work values and recovery-oriented, person-centred and trauma-informed practice.
  • The ability to connect authentically with people while maintaining appropriate professional and personal boundaries.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen without judgement and respond with empathy.
  • The confidence to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team while maintaining the integrity of the peer role.
  • A commitment to reflective practice, supervision, ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Self-awareness and resilience, with an understanding of how to maintain your own wellbeing while supporting people experiencing distress.
