About Blackfriars

Blackfriars is an independent Catholic school under the governance of the Dominican Friars, dedicated to delivering a holistic education for boys from Early Learning to Year 12. We are committed to nurturing each student's academic, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth in an inclusive and supportive environment. Our mission is to inspire young men to embrace lifelong learning, strive for personal excellence, and contribute positively to their communities.

About the Role

We are currently seeking a passionate and dedicated Teacher of Japanese to join our School on a fixed-term, part-time (0.4 FTE) basis, commencing at the beginning of Term 1, 2027.

This is a contract position through to the end of the 2027 school year.

We are seeking an enthusiastic educator who is passionate about language learning and fostering students' appreciation of Japanese language and culture.

The successful applicant will have experience in, or a willingness to embrace, the Intentional Gestures methodology for teaching Japanese, using engaging and effective strategies to support language acquisition and student confidence in communication. The ability to teach across additional subject areas would be highly regarded.

Working collaboratively with the Languages faculty and the broader Blackfriars Education Learning Team, the teacher will deliver high-quality learning experiences that cater to the diverse needs of students while promoting intercultural understanding, curiosity, and a love of learning.

At Blackfriars, our teachers are valued professionals who make a meaningful impact on students' lives. You will work in partnership with colleagues, students, and families to support every learner in reaching their full potential. This is an opportunity to contribute to a thriving academic culture while enjoying the benefits of working in a school community that values collegiality, professional growth, and work-life balance.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will hold relevant tertiary teaching qualifications and have contemporary classroom experience in Japanese language teaching. You will also demonstrate:

  • Strong subject expertise and an understanding of current best practice in Japanese language education and language acquisition.

  • A sound understanding of the Australian Curriculum: Languages, including effective approaches to language learning, assessment, and student engagement.

  • An ability to inspire students' interest in Japanese language and culture, fostering meaningful intercultural understanding and global citizenship.

  • A commitment to child safety, upholding the highest standards of care and wellbeing for students.

  • Exemplary communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents/carers.

  • Proven organisational skills with the ability to manage competing demands effectively.

  • A collaborative approach, actively engaging with colleagues and contributing to the wider life of the school.

  • Demonstrated competence against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers across the domains of professional knowledge, practice, and engagement.

  • A willingness to support the mission and values of Catholic education and contribute positively to the co-curricular and pastoral life of the School.
